Two Formats, One System
When you first explore Japan's Toto sports lottery, one of your first decisions is choosing between the standard Toto format and the Mini Toto variants. Both are based on predicting football match results, but they differ significantly in difficulty, cost strategy, and prize structure. Understanding those differences will help you choose the right starting point.
Standard Toto at a Glance
In standard Toto, you predict the outcomes of 14 designated matches. For each match, you choose:
- 1 — Home team wins
- 0 — Draw
- 2 — Away team wins
To win the jackpot, all 14 of your predictions must be correct. The sheer number of matches — each with three possible outcomes — makes a perfect prediction exceptionally rare. However, prize tiers exist for 12 or 13 correct predictions as well, making partial wins more achievable.
Mini Toto: A and B Explained
Mini Toto reduces the challenge by cutting the number of matches to 5. It comes in two sub-formats:
- Mini Toto-A: Same as Toto — predict 1, 0, or 2 for each of 5 matches. Getting all 5 correct wins the top prize.
- Mini Toto-B: The draw option is removed. You only predict whether the home or away team wins (no 0/draw option). This reduces each match to two possible outcomes, making it statistically easier.

Who Should Play Standard Toto?
Standard Toto is best suited to players who:
- Have a solid understanding of the J.League teams and their form
- Enjoy in-depth match analysis and research
- Want access to the largest potential prize pools
- Are comfortable purchasing multiple combinations to cover uncertain matches
Who Should Start with Mini Toto?
Mini Toto — particularly the B format — is ideal for:
- Players new to Toto who are still learning how the system works
- Those who follow football casually rather than intensively
- Anyone who wants to play with a minimal budget (one combination = ¥200)
- People who want more frequent wins, even if the prizes are smaller
Can You Play Both in the Same Round?
Yes. There's nothing stopping you from purchasing both a standard Toto ticket and a Mini Toto ticket in the same round. Many experienced players use Mini Toto as a "warm-up" or supplementary play alongside their main Toto selections.
The Verdict
If you're just getting started, Mini Toto-B is the most accessible entry point — fewer matches, simpler choices, and a more realistic shot at a correct prediction. As you build knowledge of the J.League and develop your analysis skills, graduating to Mini Toto-A and eventually standard Toto is a natural progression. Play at whatever level keeps the experience enjoyable and within your budget.
